1. Why did you say yes?
Many people are talking about the benefits of a garbage disposal. You no longer have to dig out the sticky garbage in the drain basket, pick and peel vegetables and throw them directly into the sink, or pour leftovers into the sink.
It only takes three simple steps to deal with kitchen waste:
①Pour kitchen waste into the sink drain
②Open the faucet
③Turn on the garbage disposal
It was so relaxed and happy, and I reached the peak of my life from then on.
After using the garbage disposer, there will no longer be wet vegetable soup chicken bones and the unpleasant sour smell in the kitchen trash can. Say goodbye to the little strong flies!
What? You said flushing garbage from the sewer is not environmentally friendly, right? However, this is better than the row of unsorted trash cans downstairs in your community, right?
2. Selection of garbage disposal
A garbage disposer is actually a machine that drives a circular cutterhead with a motor to crush food waste and then discharge it into the sewer.
Motor
There are two main types of motors for garbage disposals, one is a DC garbage disposer and the other is an AC garbage disposer.
DC
The idling speed is high, even reaching about 4000 rpm, but after the garbage is poured in, the speed will drop significantly to about 2800 rpm.
AC motor
The speed of the no-load motor is much smaller than that of the DC motor, about 1800 rpm, but the advantage is that the speed and no-load change do not change much when it is working. Although the timeliness of processing garbage is slightly slower, the torque is larger, making it more suitable for crushing. Hard food waste such as large bones.
There is a formula to see the difference between the two:
T=9549×P/n
This formula is a calculation formula commonly used in engineering to calculate the relationship between torque, power, and speed. T is the torque. Don’t investigate its origin, just treat it as a constant. P is the power of the motor. Here we take 380W. n is the rotation speed, here we take DC 2800 rpm and AC 1800 rpm:
DC torque: 9549 x 380/2800=1295.9
AC torque: 9549 x 380/1800=2015.9
It can be seen that the torque of an AC motor is greater than that of a DC motor at the same power, and the torque of a garbage disposal is its crushing capacity.
From this point of view, AC motor garbage disposers are more suitable for Chinese kitchens and are easier to handle various skeletons, while DC motors that initially entered China may be more suitable for Western kitchens, such as salad, steak, and fish nuggets.
Many DC motors on the market advertise high speeds, claiming that the higher the motor speed, the faster the grinding speed. But in fact, a higher no-load speed only means greater noise and stronger vibration… don’t mind the noise. It’s fine for commercial use, but I’d better consider it for home use.
When choosing a garbage disposal, you can use the above formula to calculate the torque of any garbage disposal you want to buy as a reference. However, one thing to note is that in order to compare the relationship between speed and torque, the power is 380W. In actual products, the power of AC motors is generally 380W, but the power of DC motors will be higher, reaching 450~550W. .
size
The size of most garbage disposals is between 300-400 x 180-230mm, and there is no problem with the horizontal size of general household cabinets. It should be noted that the distance from the bottom of the sink to the bottom of the cabinet needs to be greater than 400mm.
Different sizes of garbage disposers mean different sizes of grinding chambers. The smaller the appearance volume, the smaller the grinding chamber space.
▲Internal grinding chamber
The size of the grinding chamber directly determines the grinding speed and time. A machine with inappropriate size will only waste more time and electricity. When purchasing, merchants will indicate the number of people the garbage disposal is suitable for. It is best to choose the number that corresponds to your own。
Don’t buy a small machine that is suitable for a small number of people just to save money, otherwise it will waste more money. For example, if you buy a machine for 3 people in a family with 5 people, it can only process the garbage of 3 people at a time, which means you have to spend nearly twice as much. Electricity and water.
weight
Many people think, “The lighter the weight of the garbage disposal, the less burden it will have on the sink. What if the machine is too heavy and the sink, especially the undermount sink in my home, falls down!”
In fact, a standard installed undercounter stainless steel sink should be able to withstand the weight of an adult. The weight of a garbage disposal is insignificant to it. Moreover, when the garbage disposal is working, the rotation of the motor will produce vibrations. The heavier the garbage disposal, the heavier it is. The center of gravity of the machine is more stable.
Most garbage disposals weigh about 5 to 10kg, and they can be installed in either countertop or undercounter sinks.
However, it is not recommended to install a garbage disposal for sinks made of natural stone such as granite, as they are prone to cracking.
Safety
Safety issues have always been a concern for many people. After all, according to common sense, a machine that can quickly crush pig bones will definitely be able to crush our hands…
But the garbage disposal machine has undergone nearly a hundred years of proven improvements, changing the feared crushing cutterhead into a bladeless design.
Bladeless grinding disc
And after it is installed on the sink, the distance between the drain outlet of the sink and the cutterhead is about 200mm, and you may not be able to touch the cutterhead when you reach in.
If you are still afraid, you can use chopsticks, spoons and other tools to push the garbage into the drain. Some manufacturers consider people’s fear and some even specially install drain covers with long handles.
However, no matter how safe the machine is, there are certain dangers, so it is better to pay more attention, especially to children.
If you are not sure about the details, you can discuss it with your group friends. It is still necessary for people who are decorating together to chat at any time.
4. Installation steps of garbage disposal
The installation of the garbage disposer is to install an additional machine between the sink and the sewer pipe. First, remove the entire set of sewer pipes that originally came with the sink, remove the drain basket, and replace it with a “drain basket” dedicated to the machine.
▲Special “drain basket” for garbage disposal
This “drain basket” is actually a connector that also functions as a drain basket. The technical term is called a flange, which is used to fix the sink and the machine together.
In the end, only they themselves know whether those who have installed a garbage disposal regret it or not. For those who have not installed it yet, the same saying goes, the one that suits you is the best.
